Ona by Torclum is a special edition of our organic extra virgin arbequina olive oil created with a charitable purpose: to raise funds for microtia research. Microtia is a congenital ear deformity affecting one in every 6,000 babies, leading to hearing loss and even deafness.
Ona, the daughter of the Torclum owners, is one of the children affected by microtia in our country. This is why we decided to create Ona, the solidarity bottle from Torclum.
What is Microtia?
Microtia is a congenital ear deformity. It usually affects only one ear, although it can occur in both, and it is typically not detected until birth.
In milder cases, it causes the ear to be smaller than usual; in more severe cases, the ear canal is either absent or improperly developed, requiring surgical reconstruction.
We investigate to prevent
There are many things we don’t know about microtia.
We don’t know its causes, there is no test to diagnose it before birth, and we don’t know if it can be prevented. Research suggests that microtia may have environmental and hereditary causes, but the responsible gene has not yet been identified.
Having a child affected by microtia causes significant anxiety within the family, leading to numerous medical consultations, hospital stays, and learning difficulties. The better we understand this condition, the more we can support these families.

New gathering of families with Microtia, organized by AME
On December 14, 2019, a new gathering of families affected by microtia took place at the Teaching Building of St. Joan de Déu in Barcelona, organized by AME – Asociación Microtia España.
This event, once again, was filled with the enthusiasm of all members of the Association and the professionalism and dedication of the team from the Hospital Sant Joan de Déu in Barcelona.
65 families attended to listen to medical professionals and researchers who participated in the event. At Torclum, we will continue to offer our support to ensure that research into microtia continues.
